Built-in Bookcases

I have a wall. One side is the wall in my dining room. The other side is built-in bookcases that show in the living room.

Currently this bookcase is wood, stained a dark color. I want to re-decorate it, brighten it up, but don't know what to do other than paint - boring.

Living room has no windows and walls are wood - log house. Need space to look brighter, lighter.

Any suggestions out there?

All I have to say is thank God the Century 2 was not built.

To bad about that Canterra project on Whyte. Looked like a solid building.
